Cataloging and Online Presenting

Presenting artwork online is not as straight forward as it once was. Not so long ago, you uploaded your image to your website and considered it a fait accompli. Nowadays, utilizing social media (if you so choose) to broaden image exposure is considered a smart tool for the promotional tool box. The flip side is that this creates a much longer, and somewhat more involved task list. Add to this list your online shop, or even just the simple task of cataloging your latest work, and you are looking at some considerable time spent "in the office."

Personally, I have reached the point where keeping it all straight in my head is next to impossible, so now when I create work I follow a check list.

This checklist is a macro enabled MSWord template I use at the computer. The printed version kept in studio as a reminder so that the prep work is completed before the computer work. I've included a link to a downloadable file here http://www.colmitchell.com/document-catalogpresent.html

I type an X into the gray blank areas that apply for each piece. I use Flickr to store my images online, as well as on an external portable hard drive. I take my own photos and, depending on the piece, I utilize a professional photographer's services.
I also use Flickr as my portfolio manager to minimizes the time and effort of updating my website portfolio, which automatically updates when I add my images to "sets" on Flickr.
GYST (Get Your Sh*t Together) is software expressly for visual artists "that houses all of the art business related paperwork and educational needs for artists." (Visit website for catchy GYST tune!)

Once I have presented the image online and have cataloged it in GYST, I copy and paste the completed list, including the date of completion, into the Notes section under the related work so that I know when it was presented online and in which way(s).

2011 Reflection Part 2: Reflection Date

Reflection Date

So. I am getting deeper into the preparation stage for this month's planning for 2012 via the Artist Conspiracy program. Yesterday I completed a second level of preparation: the "Reflection Date." (read about first level here). And it was, well . . . awesome.

After taking some time the previous day to list my Acknowledgments & Accomplishments for 2011, I spent a little over 2 hours considering and answering about 8 specific questions regarding each item (or group of items) on the list. This was such a self educating and illuminating exercise. Not only did I have a great list over-viewing accomplishments of 2011, but I now had concrete, referable (written down) thoughts, ideas, and feelings about those accomplishments -- and the basis of a new plan for 2012.

Next steps: Looking at income overview gathered from the past 3 years and a Sunday Brunch financial goal setting teleconference, compliments of Artist Conspiracy!

2011 Reflections

Just finished up working on an Acknowledgments and Accomplishments reflection list of 2011 via Artist Conspiracy. This is in preparation for a 1-2 hour "Reflection Date," with self, which will set the appropriate background informational zone for the next step; the planning of 2012, which is January's focus.

Alyson Stanfield supplies a long list of questions, many of which I am sure I would not have thought of asking myself. Upon completion it becomes obvious how taking the time to look at what you have accomplished in overview becomes a tremendous aid for the process of goal setting; tweaking, ramping-up, adding to, or even abandoning previous choices, plans and strategies. It also helps to bring those successes to the forefront.

Here is a sampling of my year in review:

At the beginning of the year I did not have a working contact list - years end > 99
Twitter – on Jan 13 I had 23 followers, year end 217, a gain of 194!
I added/explored/tried out 7 new venues for exhibiting my art
I wrote 27 more blog posts than the previous year
I added 8 new marketing materials/tools to my repertoire
I attained 3 significant (for me) goals

I can thank Artist Conspiracy for much of the above! Looking forward to my "Reflection Date!"

Baring the Underbelly of My Studio: Eleven Months of Garbage

I wish you could have seen my studio last week. Well, maybe I don’t. The state of it can only be described as “explosive.” A very intense year limited my time to mainly producing, and not so much to maintaining a well organized clutter-free space. Add to that, my process leans toward the “messy” side of things. Paper bits, cleaning tissues, ink pots, wash splatter, end up all over.

It has been 11 months since the last big clean/organization and I am in dire need of a refreshed space.

Although my process is, as I mentioned, messy, it is also a process which does not require a large amount of paint, paint being the one item used in my studio with the highest capability of adversely impacting health and environment through its production, properties, and disposal.

From Non Toxic Paint & Print:
"Acrylic polymer paints are safer than oil paints, primarily due to the absence of toxic solvents. No reproducible adverse health effects have been associated with the use of acrylic polymer mediums. Like all water soluble paints, however, acrylics contain preservatives (usually formaldehyde in small amounts)."

The advantage to a once yearly clean-out is that I get a good overview of the waste I produce. And I can look at some of my practices and see what changes need to be made.

Of course, everything is relative, (I searched Google images for “messy artist studio” but results simply looked properly productive to me), though I suspect the opportunity to see examples similar to this is rare.

May this offer us all some insight.

Starting with plastic
I keep a bag in the studio where I cram all the bits of plastic materials that come into the studio such as canvas wrapper, disposable glove packages, etc. (plastic shopping bags are reused)

Ink Pots

The red bag of ink pots holds a collection of pots I’ve used since I started this technique in 2008. The larger single ones hold about 1.5 ounces, which I generally use for larger paintings over 4ft x 4ft or for washes in smaller paintings. I try to reuse these, and am hoping to come up with some bright idea to create something with them eventually.

Peeled paint
New to this year, I have started keeping the peeled paint. Normally it goes into the trash, its dry form the best way to dispose of acrylic paint, but it may be usable in a project.

Empty paint & medium containers
Again, a collection since I started this technique in 2008. Why so spare? I tend to reuse the medium containers (more on that later), and as you saw from the size of the ink pots I don’t use a lot of paint (it only looks that way due to the paper texture).

Re-Use

I re-use the smaller medium containers for holding many items. I use them to hold upended paint containers when they are near finished to get the most paint use out of them. I also use them to prop canvases on for addressing the edges and for drying. For some projects I use the lids as palettes for mixing colours. The paint peels out of them quite easily for re-use. I realize at some point that I won’t need as many and they will start to be recycled instead of reused.

“GOLDEN Acrylics are packaged in HDPE plastic, which can then be reused or recycled in many areas.”

“Tri-Art have chosen PETE plastic for all our packaging, including our tubes. It is fully recyclable, does not leach, and requires less energy to produce.”

Garbage

FIVE kitchen garbage sized bags of garbage. FOUR of these bags hold ONLY tissue & paper that was used to remove paint/ink from pen nibs, test wash colours, mop spills/over-spray from washes. I am still debating on using these as fire-starter material for outdoor fire-pit (only due to the fact the paint contained is negligible due to watered down state during use). Of course, burning anything is debatable.

So there you have my eleven month studio-waste, recycling, reducing, re-using overview.
I'm feeling pretty good about it all with the possible exception of cleaning rags; there just might be a better way. If you have one please share!

Tools and Good Questions for Artist About Page

My "About Page" sprung easily from A Good Question Challenge.Surprisingly easy!

Ok...well...admittedly after a fair bit of work. And because it was a new process for me I decided to share it to hopefully shed some insight and offer up some truly excellent resources.

I have wanted to do an About Page for my website since beginning of September (2011), however I was struggling with the writing, generating content was a painfully slow process for me. In October I signed up for Cynthia Morris' Free Write Fling class, and, happily, soon triumphed over that obstacle.

(What is Free Write? It is a technique in which a person writes continuously for a set period of time, without worrying about spelling, grammar or self-criticism. It lets you get your thoughts onto paper quickly, giving you content, which you can then later edit to your hearts content.)

Concurrently, I was enrolled in Alyson B Stanfield's Artist Conspiracy course, where a suitable list of appropriate questions for artists was proffered which I could use to generate content -- questions I used to create A Good Question Challenge.

I had good topic questions, I was generating content. But did I have the right content for an About Page?

A Google-ing I went and found this awesome adaptable-for-artists gem:

Here Michael Martine explains the following clearly and concisely in a 17 minute video:

Adding another layer of self education to this project, I downloaded a writer's program called Scrivener. Previously, I would have something like 11 msword windows open trying to organize each separate piece of writing. Scrivener lets you rearrange segments as files so you can see and rearrange the outline of your writing in a side panel and work on individual bits as needed. (Plus a TON more) Then generate the entire text into a seamless piece for msword. The tutorial is rather intense at an hour long, but worth it (and necessary) as it steps you through the program. Very cool tool for organizing larger writing projects.

With Scrivener, the final piecing together of my About Page was almost effortless.

Then, for good measure, I went back and looked at those gorgeous About Pages and tweaked.

My left brain really wants to jump in and answer this question analytically — A) What change(s) have I effected and B) in what manner do I effect change (if I do actually make a difference in people’s lives)

A) It is likely I have adequately covered some specific examples in a previous question on Day 6

B) I truly believe everyone effects change in the world to some degree; that everyday someone is making a difference in someone else’s life through action and modelling based on ideologies or philosophies

What projects are you working on right now, and why are you enthusiastic about them?

I am in between cycles right now, just out of an intense cycle of production. I have a couple small projects for the interim — my next steps slowly percolating.

This 'good question challenge' is working toward another project that I am keen to put into place. This exercise of self study I hope will add some dimensionality to my online presence — where connections are made with less and much is unknown and assumed. I look at it as a positive bridge to connecting and relating.

I have a few smaller works on the go in the studio to finish up, which always helps to clear the path for new adventures.

And I am participating in Celebrity Portrait over the next month, a local version of Star Portraits. I am simply enjoying the process, and the opportunity for experimentation & community connections.

What organizations are you associated with and in what ways? How does each organization contribute to your art career or personal development?

Many of my previous answers in the question challenge have outlined the beneficial experiences received through my volunteer role as president of the Huntsville Art Society (HAS), so for this question I will focus on my role as a member of it as well as two other organizations I enjoy membership with: Muskoka Arts and Crafts (MAC), and the Arts Council of Muskoka (ACOM).

All three organizations offer a diverse variety of show & sales, and exhibition opportunities year round; spread across our Muskoka region. Through both HAS and MAC my work has been a recipient of awards of excellence.

I volunteer yearly for MAC’s Spring Show event, and I have done some sporadic volunteer work for ACOM, such as sitting on their strategic review committee, and facilitating partnerships between HAS and ACOM, as well as workshops for them.

I have also attended many Creative Muskoka meetings which focus more on the creative economy than the arts.

All three organizations offer opportunities for learning through lectures, networking, and workshops both in the business of art and creative skills sharing.

All three organizations partner with with other groups and municipalities to offer even more opportunities, and I am quite proud to be able to say I have participated on many levels in support of their efforts. Muskoka is a genuine arts community and received its official designation by the District of Muskoka through the efforts of Muskoka Arts and Crafts on April 28, 2008.

How do I spend my time outside of the studio, including hobbies, interests, sports, family, and volunteer activities?

Aside from daydreaming . . .

I am attracted to activities that are intimate and reflective, yet interspersed with sudden emotional extremes . . . so obviously I own my own set of golf clubs, and, though the thrill has gone of putting worm to hook, I enjoy fishing.

I am an avid movie watcher, and I rarely miss a night of reading (a real actual book) -- I adore good science fiction & fantasy.

I have an active volunteer life within the arts, and I have been known to do woodworking and minor house renovations with (drool) power tools.

I enjoy collecting things -- mostly for their appeal and not for having any serious monetary value: black teacups & wine glasses, animal eggcups and salt & pepper shakers, mirrors, old children’s books, weather-worn things -- pretty or unusual rocks/shells/driftwood/fungi, lime-green Christmas ornaments . . .

. . . to name a few.

What career successes (education, exhibitions, collections, . . . ) are you most proud of having accomplished?

I am tremendously fortunate to have amassed a long list of accomplishments and successes in a relatively short period of time, and of course, I did not do it all alone.

My entire CV holds special meaning in every entry; collaborations, awards, published images, professional development, innovation, event creation, charitable donations, recognition, and singularly special opportunity realization. This makes for a tough decision, but here goes . . .

1. 2011 Gallery representation, Bluestone Fine Art Gallery, Philadelphia, US

2. 2011 First solo exhibition, the Framing Place & Gallery, Huntsville, Ont.

3. 2010 Showing and demonstrating as part of the G8/G20 Media Centre’s Muskoka Corridor, Direct Energy Centre, Toronto, Ont.

4. 2010 Exhibitor at The Art Space gallery’s first exhibition Eight back from the Lake, an exhibition of the eight artists who represented Muskoka and Canada during the G20, Huntsville, Ont.

5. 2010 Exhibitor, Sense of Place, an exhibition for the post G8 grand opening of the Canada Summit Centre, Huntsville, Ont.

6. 2010 Nominated for the YWCAs women of distinctions awards in arts/culture and creative energy, Muskoka

I also believe an essential element of career success is to work outside the studio, be involved in your arts community, help forward initiatives that support and sustain visual artists, not only for the breadth of professional development benefits inherent in that activity (which has led me to acquire a wide range of skills, experience, and networking exposure), but in working beyond the studio we ensure there are systems in place, and additional opportunities — that both art and artists have a place of reception, and are well received.

As President of the Huntsville Art Society (2008-2011), There were so many accomplishments I was privileged to be part of through either assisting, initiating or creating. The following five I am particularly close to and proud of:

1. 2011 Project Coordinator: The Pachter Factor Art exhibition by Contemporary Canadian Icon Charles Pachter, opening as a Nuit Blanche North Extravaganza event including a VIP pre-event with presentation by the Mayor of Huntsville, a paparazzi lined red carpet arrival complete with volunteers portraying the Queen, Prince William, princess Kate, a "Butter Tart Honour Guard," an evening of limo exit public photo op, including exterior entrance wall slide show projection of selected works, and a Projection Injection live feed onto opposite exterior entrance wall of red carpet arrivals onto projected images of Pachter's paintings.

2. 2010 - Establishment of The Art Space: Gallery • Workshops Huntsville’s first non-profit contemporary art gallery venue which offers exhibitions and workshops to the public.

3. 2010 - Initiated the establishment of the Town of Huntsville’s Arts Placement Working Group A committee formed to shape policy on art in public spaces and buildings in the municipality of Huntsville, which selected and curated local art for the post G8 grand opening of the new Canada Summit Centre Exhibition Hall

4. 2010 - 2009 - Co-originator/grant writer of Creativation: Art, Kids, Community 2009/10 A new pilot program offering innovative and challenging programs and activities that support and enhance the Ministry of Education’s Visual Arts Curriculum, as well as expose students to the vast range of creative experiences and visual culture available to them in their local and regional community.

5. 2010 - Originator and curator of ArtSHIFT An exhibition which partnered 5 artists with 5 local industries to explore creativity and innovation in local industry, and showcased works which incorporate those concepts, utilizing related raw materials supplied by each local industry sponsor.

What professional and personal obstacles have I overcome to get where I am today? What essential lessons have I learned from any mistakes?

Up until 2008, work space was a challenge. When we moved, I transformed a pre-existing “sleeping cabin” or “bunkie” on our new property into my studio.

A personal obstacle would have to be public speaking. I suspect it would be so much easier if I was an extrovert, however, I have had more opportunities than I ever wanted over the past three years and practice definitely makes for improvement. I can do it. I am not saying Im ready for TED yet, but I can do it.

I dont recall mistakes per se, more like making the best decision I could with information or skills I had at the time. Time seems to heal most embarrassments, and you do what you can toward fixing it or improving the next similar situation.

Essential lessons learned . . .
1. Do not let negative emotions interfere with your goals. Regardless of how negatively another person can interject into any part of your situation, response or reaction is best considered within the parameters of your goals, and not your ego.
2. Do not apply an entire container of gel medium on your canvas and expect to scrape it into an even layer, in one swipe, even if you think you have the perfect sized scraper — for it WILL lay thick in the middle due to canvas bowing.
3. Do not step over a gel covered canvas - you WILL get dirt on it . . . dirt you won’t see until it is dry and permanently adhered.

4. Do Read Yes Man by Danny Wallace. (The movie does not do it justice.)
5. Do Say ‘yes’ more often -- it is an adventure in living.

Traveled to New York City to see the sights: Empire State Building, Radio City Music Hall, the Guggenheim, Statue of Liberty, The Waldorf Astoria, various plays; and Buffalo to visit the Albright-knox Gallery

Was nominated in 2010 for the YWCA Woman of Distinction Awards in Arts, Culture and Creative Energy

Homeschooled my two sons from 1996 - 2008 (which honed my project management skills) and included "enrolling" my sons in ”Hogwarts Summer Correspondence School” 3 years in a row: 3-4 weeks each summer of intense co-creating online with other teacher-parents to create a nightly owl delivered Harry Potter inspired curriculum complete with supplies shipped from Diagon Alley, handmade magical books on regular educational topics, treats from Hogsmead, and correspondence/grades from Hogwarts teachers on parchment - the occasional Howler came too

Transformed an entire room into a Hogwarts inspired hangout: including faux-stone castle walls and floors, trompe l'oeil ceiling, secret hidings spaces inside walls, mosaic-ed baseboard heater, modified furniture and fixtures

I studied Fine Arts at Fanshaw College in London Ontario, and from that I came away with the knowledge that access to your fellow artists is essential for growth, support, reciprocal mentorship, and inspiration.

I have possibly an unusual amount of diverse on-the-ground self-training. I Homeschooled my two sons from 1996 till 2008 in the classical method which meant a lot of relearning as well as new learning, for instance I learned Latin so I would be able to teach it.

In 2009 I read the book Yes Man by British humorist Danny Wallace. The memoir relates a 6-month period in which he committed himself to saying 'Yes' to everything. Aside from finding it to be a laugh-out-loud read I was convinced its premis was a worthy practice. I did absolutely follow it up with my own period of saying yes to any request; if it was related to art and the business of art I responded affirmatively, if not at times eagerly as in the case of live television interviews.

The ‘Yes’ approach often took me out of my comfort zone and presented situations that required specific skills or knowledge. I frequently had to draw on the expertise and knowledge of friends or instructors. Subsequently, I have attended literally hundreds of workshops-info sessions-lectures-meetings etc in just over 2 years. Most have in some way contributed to the business side of things: computer graphics & design, project management, grant writing, creating budgets, bookkeeping, marketing and promotion, event planning, presenting, proposal drafting, and chairing an organization to name a few.

What new art or business skills have you learned in the last year?

This year was spent honing a very long list of skills with thanks to a participation in a year long course on the business of art (Alyson B. Stanfield’s Artist Conspiracy), but two stand out as unique to this year:

Writing: Thanks to an on-line course this October by writer and creativity coach Cynthia Morris, I have a newfound ability to generate content in a freer, less painful manner than previously.
Project management on a large multiple-event scale: specifically The Pachter Factor, an month long art exhibition by Contemporary Canadian Icon Charles Pachter, opening as a Nuit Blanche North Extravaganza event including a VIP pre-event with presentation by the Mayor of Huntsville, a paparazzi lined red carpet arrival complete with volunteers portraying the Queen, Prince William, princess Kate, a "Buttertart Honour Guard," an evening of limo exit public photo op, including exterior entrance wall slide show projection of selected works, and a Projection Injection live feed onto opposite exterior entrance wall of red carpet arrivals onto projected images of Pachter's paintings.

What made me decide to pursue my particular technique? What do I like about my specific medium or technique?

Drawn to colour and texture I enjoy working in almost any medium where I can utilize these two elements as part of the expression. I have in the past used a diversity of mediums: film, photography, sculpture in metal & found objects, cloth, etc. Sometimes what I want to express is best expressed in a particular medium or combination of mediums.

Currently I am focused on developing to a greater technical proficiency my own contemporary paper manipulation & ink technique. This technique involves 3 very diverse steps or stages to reach completion (paper,wash,ink), ultimately melding these 3 steps into something new, unique. Both the paper and the wash stages contribute to the process in a manner I cannot predict in its entirety. The unpredictability and strong contributing attributes of both the first two stages makes working in this technique a challenge, but also offers an eagerly anticipated surprise factor. There is an attractive see-sawing partnership to the process which underscores the final image. I very much work through a process of reaction and inspiration offered by the expression of the materials, unique to each piece.

How did I end up becoming an artist?

Some of my earliest memories (age three or four) centred around drawing with crayons, excitedly sharing sheets and sheets with any adult in the vicinity. Every school essay, report or project had to have a drawing, better yet, several drawings. My unwavering interest led to art lessons by grade four. My preteen bi-weekly allowance's unfailing first purchase a new thick pad of clean white typewriter paper. High-school and self earnings deliciously coincided with a discovery of Grumbacher artist supply catalogues.

Not having a creative outlet is for me an uncomfortable state. I am inherently, fundamentally, intrinsically driven to create.

Being an artist is a heady adventure without map or instruction manual, inherently exploratory. The process of creating, starting with a pleasurable or stinging seed of inspiration — whether it be a word, an image, a scene, music, a conversation — of seeing what is not there, or seeing something in a different light, of connecting with the essence of it, working it out with my spirit, mind and materials, translating it into a viewable or experience-able form in an attempt to communicate its essence, something that speaks to the elements of that seed of inspiration — is intense, imminently satisfying and somewhat magical.

What is Free Write Fling? It is a month-long daily writing affair of

"15 minutes per day to give yourself over to your Muse. A quickie. A hot date with your Muse, every day, for 31 days."

Currently I do not consider my self a writer or even an aspiring writer, but additional ways to connect with my muse will forever be irresistible, and I also have this desire to connect and share on a larger global scale. To do that I need to . . . well . . . write.

To give you an idea of this month's illuminating journey I am listing here my reactions or responses to each writing session.

It is important to note that the 3 words included describe more of how the writing session was for me, and not the content of the writing.

Day 1

My three words; calming, sputtered, sidetracked (and a forth would be officious)

Day 2

Today I dialed it down a notch, and can now read my own writing a bit better too.

My 3 words: architect, present, connected

Day 3

I’m just happy to get words out…doing a page and a half consistently (pen on paper)

3 words: pleased, positive, amused

Day 4

Day 4 and things are looking good! I was looking forward to writing today and realized yesterday that if I wanted to generate lots of content for my blog I would need to do more than one set of 15 mins. So I sat down and brainstormed starters/topics. I decided to do the daily one given first, as it seems more “anxiety free through non association with my wants/needs” and may set a tone to help me get through topics I know I will pressure myself over. And gues what…today…1.5 pages on given starter, and FOUR point 5 pages on my own starter. Had to set that timer 3 times! It was so great.

Two sets of 3 words: contributory, imaginative, cog

AND accomplished, propelled, hopeful

Day 5

At first glance I took this starter so literally, but then it HIT me how appropriate it was in relation to working along side someone (or a group) on a project. It was wild writing something that was such an obvious analogy (with every sentence or other word have a double meaning) to my own experiences.

3 words: appropriate, analogue, related

Day 6

Today I was in a position of need to use what I wrote, so I changed my starter to reflect what I needed. It needed to be short, so the 1.5 pages I usually get in 15 mins was perfect. This so works for me. This has been something I very much needed!
3 words: necessary, accomplish-able, friendly

Day 7

Some days…the time isn't there to fling longer. So I skipped the given starter and went straight to my own. I do worry a bit about using up some of my 15 on a tangent. It’s a bit distracting when I can see myself going there. I’m looking forward to where I’ll be in another week’s time.(more experienced?)

Bought myself a candle (couldn't believe I was out of candles when this started) and girly lighter today, and found a decent pen.

3 words- forward, useful, cream-puff (some of it more useful than others.HA)

Day 8

I sort of mused about getting water in a non literal sense.
3 words: varied, non-literal, guesswork
2nd 15 with my own starter felt like I had entered a 2nd level of intensity.
3 words: deeper, meaty, meditative

Day 9

It is Thanksgiving here so I pretty much just “clocked the ink” and no surprise that I was somewhat distracted. I’m not disappointed though.
3 words – toothless, feeble, daydream-y

Day 10

More impressed that I showed up to write over what I wrote. I couldn’t get to it till late and my mind was not on task. But I am not unhappy at all, as at least I had a chance to be creative!

3 words: distracted, purpose, outlet

Day 11

It is pretty amazing where some starters can take you. Writing today was very self-reflective, gave me some new things to think about,and created a fuller awareness of how healthy this 15 mins a day is/can be.

Day 12

I had guests since day 11 (they left day13) and getting the time in managed to be doable though sometimes in the hour before midnight I argued with myself about whether I should, would or could…or not. Each time I chose to push through. Perhaps the time spent on working out those 3 words is equally important at this stage. Considering, sometimes long, on the positive impacts of those 15 mins sticks more on my mind than what I have written, and I suspect is a compelling impetus to do it again.

3 words: fun, enjoyable, me-moment

Day 13

Wrote two today, using my own starters. I’m obviously enjoying this process as I wouldn't say the writing was any great shakes, but happily hunkered down to writing for 30 mins.

3 words: productive, relaxing, good

Day 14

Another good day. My own starter again.

3 words; focused, meaty, authentic

Day 15

I’m joining the “had a great day club!”
My own starter (3.5 pages!)

3 words: achievement, meaningful, informative

Day 16

Trying a starter that is formed as a question to allow me to explore the whys and the possible solutions. Very effective!
My 3 words ( 4 pages later!) : introspective, decisive, positive

Day 17

I've come to appreciate how this can be used as a significant tool for working out thoughts, ideas or issues that just sit in our minds tumbling eternally.

I experienced a benefit which I had not yet experienced in this course. And it happened when I was out running errands. I was sitting in my truck outside the grocery store STRESSING and not wanting to be stressing. I deliberately turned my mind to some of the writing I had done, the positive outcomes, and I felt…better! Energized even. I walked into that grocery store with a bounce in my step and extremely energized. I have no idea if that will occur again, but I am very much appreciating this entire experience.

3 words: emotional, localized, cherish-ment

Day 18

3 words; emotional, personal, risky

Day 19

I was headachey going in so my prompt started with “My mind is like a carved rock” and the entire thing continued with being an analogy on how a mind is like a rock; different kinds of rock for different ways of thinking. When I read it out loud it sounded somewhat like poetry.

3 words: kaleidoscopic, textured, comforting

Day 20

Hmmmm….As soon as I looked at that starter I knew trouble was not far behind — though why patterns immediately signaled negativity is a mystery…and one I was not up to exploring. So I determined to avoid the obvious pitfall ahead and… my mind flailed around until I noticed the sound of my breathing and thought A HA! Breathing is a pattern! So I continued to write just words, sometimes a phrase, of what I was noticing around me — from the swish my sleeve made across the page as I moved to a new line, to the blink of my eyes, to the tickle of my hair and my breath again.

Fun read aloud...full of onomatopoeia

It was very…in-the-moment, rhythmic, and calming.

Day 21

Lately, I have left the writing to the bitter end of the day, and though I don’t mind writing later in the day, the bitter end wasn’t exactly leaving me with enough mental energy. Today, writing earlier allowed me to dig a bit deeper.

Stole 15 mins in the car on back of discarded diagrams.

Have been using my own prompts to work out some stress lately (writing exorcisms?).

Again, it is amazing the impact 15 mins can have.

I know there are five days to go but already I feel like a Graduate.
I am genuinely enjoying this. I look forward to writing, to my “writing time,” and it is helping me in a variety of ways outside and beyond of what I had originally intended or surmised.

Day 27
The flood gates are OPEN. (Today at least) I have been writing for the better part of the day! I’m doing a self interview and it is going well. I am not editing myself while I’m doing it, and I am not lingering long over a particular question worrying about the grammar/wording etc. I’m just getting the info/thoughts out.

I think I’m like a kid with a new toy; writing here, writing there . . . I feel all warmed up — like a boxer before a fight — loose, energized, primed.

I think it's pretty official I have a bird brain. Or rather this Bird/Hen/Chick has birds on her mind. I finally had to ask myself Why? Here’s my top 3:

1. The way the wind plays with their feathers, the way they puff up against the cold...well that just speaks to my love of movement, texture & line; an excellent pairing with my paper technique.

2. Erect heads and chests-thrown-out-poses suggest “too sexy for the catwalk” attitudes. They don't sit around and contemplate their state of affairs, they are in the moment: Where food? Water? Danger? Mate? Defend territory & young! Impress potential mates! Each moment counts. They are on the job and dressed for success. Capturable.

3. Bird imperatives and behaviours are ultimately relatable and I find connections and contrasts irresistible, such as portraying small birds with big attitudes or with moods common to humanity.

A Trio Of Ravens

As a subject for my paper works, Ravens translate well into a flurry of lines, deep textures and royal metallics; the technique and mediums alluding to their diverse, complicated natures and multifaceted representations in world wide raven folk lore and mythology.

I prefer using black coloured papers when shaping ravens, as used in these three characters: The Diviner, The Enchanter and The Charmer.

The Diviner is a Featured work on my Contemporary Paper Artist website this month.

I'm always interested in stories on ravens in mythology and would appreciate any links or book titles in response.

New Year Bliss!

11 hours in the studio!! No significant breaks aside from the necessaries!

I finished 3 small (8"x8") canvases that were started and hanging around making me feel guilty.

The water in these works has been topped with clear tar gel, so when the light hits right, the reflection disappears and the water glistens. Fun!

It started with me staring at a 12in x 36in canvas imagining a river bank scene with mirror like reflections of skeletal white jutting and tangled tree roots adorning a misty shoreline.

So the question was...

How can I get/create a reflection of shoreline and driftwood using manipulated paper? How could I come close even and still keep it true to the paper's own willful fault lines without going to the extreme of breaking the paper down into a pulpy mess for molding? How would I get the loosely applied washes to mirror? I am deliberately trying not to paint the scene, as it defeats the whole process of working with materials allowed to have their own ideas or generous input to the outcome.

Well I think I've got the solution. Oh ya.

Just came back from the studio. It involves a two stage canvas prep and a two stage wash process. First stage of canvas prep completed and drying waiting for stage 2: Apply washes which then goes back to stage 2 of stage 1: canvas prep.

Washington DC Metro Station on a cold January morning in 2007. He played six Bach pieces for about 45 minutes. During that time approximately two thousand people went through the station, most of them on their way to work.

After three minutes a middle aged man noticed there was a musician playing. He slowed his pace and stopped for a few seconds and then hurried to meet his schedule.

After four minutes the violinist received his first dollar: a woman threw the money in the box and continued to walk.

At six minutes, a young man leaned against the wall to listen to him, then looked at his watch and started to walk again.

At ten minutes, a 3-year-old boy stopped, but his mother tugged him along hurriedly as the kid stopped to look at the violinist. Finally the mother pushed hard and the child continued to walk, turning his head all the time. This action was repeated by several other children. Every parent, without exception, forced them to move on.

At 45 minutes, the musician played on. Only six people stopped and stayed for a while. About twenty gave him money but continued to walk their normal pace. He collected $32.

At one hour he finished playing and silence took over. No one noticed. No one applauded, nor was there any recognition.

No one knew this, but the violinist was Joshua Bell, one of the best musicians in the world. He played one of the most intricate pieces ever written, with a violin worth $3.5 million dollars. Two days before Joshua Bell sold out a theater in Boston where the seats averaged $100.

This is a real story. Joshua Bell playing incognito in the metro station was organized by the Washington Post as part of a social experiment about perception, taste and people's priorities. The questions raised: in a common place environment at an inappropriate hour, do we perceive beauty? Do we stop to appreciate it? Do we recognize talent in an unexpected context?

One possible conclusion reached from this experiment could be: If we do not have a moment to stop and listen to one of the best musicians in the world playing some of the finest music ever written, with one of the most beautiful instruments . . . how many other things are we missing?

Plein Air Event raises $3500 for Student Scholarships

I thoroughly enjoyed the day, even though I missed out on wine and stuff due to killing the battery on my car and needing to wait for my friend's son and mom to come give me a boost! I was only about 15 minutes late for the auction though, so was able to catch most of the grand finale.

Again, tremendous fun meeting other artists in a more relaxed environment. And it was simply an excellent exercise to stretch and challenge the usual "modus operandi." The buzz and many times voiced enjoyment from the spectators was a great boost.

I had a lovely spot down by the river in River Mill Park. And I managed to keep to my current technique of paper/wash/line, using tinfoil as an "oven" to speed up the paper layer drying time. Always fun to experiment!

I just wanted to send a huge thank you to everyone for making the first annul en plein air a huge success. It is now obvious this event will run annually, and I'm certain it will grow into a grand event down the road. One day I hope to see as many as 100 artists and perhaps even figure how it can become an event where the main street of huntsville is actually closed and get some performing art happening as well as the painting. Time will tell.

Regardless, this could not have been such a success without each and every one of you. I thank you for producing such fabulous work and offering a full day out of your busy lives.

At the end of the day we managed to raise about $3500. This translates to over $1000 for three students continuing their education in the arts from each of our communities (huntsville, bracebridge and gravenhurst).

Getting Ready for Summer

Oh I have been sooooo absent from my blog! I've got the guilts!
The past couple of weeks have been dedicated to meetings: Huntsville Art Crowd, Innovations Muskoka, Art in the Heart, and 6 Degrees Muskoka, to name a few. The four weeks before that I was involved with Dorset's Words, Music, Art and Wine event, Silver Bridge Gallery's Metal Petals show, Muskoka Arts and Crafts Body of Work show, Huntsville Art Crowd's Elements In Art Show, and The Art of Remembering show. I've also had to arrange my submissions in Solyne Gallery to fit with their new policies under a deadline.
So, now you know...I've been understandably otherwise engaged.

I have summer plans that have NOT been adandoned (just in case anyone was wondering) and look forward to refocusing my attentions to them very shortly.

As for today....I am going back INTO the studio! For the first time since May 18th. Ten days! (urrgg!) I'm not going to dwell further on that.

New works up at Solyne, but not for much longer as two are sold already. So have a quick peek from the link to the left.

In the Studio -- Finally!

Things were going so good for a while, I was in the studio every weekend as well as 2-3 times during the week--then it all fell apart.
It started with Income Tax season. Add in executing a contest for Huntsville Art Crowd, multiple meetings, creating promotional materials for HAC's new High School rep, time in the workshop making picture frames, applying for shows, meeting with teachers, homework issues....the list does go on....and you have one empty studio.
This week ended with a brainstorming and information session at Rene M. Caisse Theatre for Muskoka's Designated Arts Community status on Monday, a writer researching Huntsville Art Crowd's artist trading card activities for the Beyond the City magazine on Tuesday, and my designing of The Raven's Garden Party blogsite and logo on the Wednesday. SO NOW things have settled. I was able to get back into the studio and create! Finally!

The New Look

It was one of those eye popping neck cracking computer marathon days today. I was determined to (1) improve the look of my blog (with my severly limited html skills) which I believe I have accomlished (though I might just be hypnotized by the computer screen),

(2) Set up my 2009 accounting in excel and enter what I have (catchup)

(3) update my Etsy store, and

(4) thanks to a lovely comment and tip via Etsy I also set up a new Gallery at Soleyne. Check out the gallery link to the left. If you have a blog, I highly suggest this free gallery site.

I was also invited to participate in Wood's End's 2009 Woodland Art Experience today, to which I happily replied YES!

I'll have to make a list one of these days, but suffice it to say enough to keep me from working as much as I would like to.

I did get something accomplished with my art in the past two days. For one, my income tax! *whew* For another, I made two frames. A new frame for the Raven's Mirror and a frame for a new piece titled Autumn Kaleidoscope. And I took the frame intended for the Raven (but which I decided wasn't working as best it could) and gave it to the koi.

Great instructions here:

A tortillon is a tightly rolled sheet of paper, the inside of which is pushed out into a pencil shape and used by pencil, pastel and charcoal artists to blend and push colour around on the drawing paper, softening edges and graduating tones.

I spent the holidays working away on an assortment of sizes and trying out a couple new subjects with the manipulated paper technique. And I even managed to take some photos of the process so I thought this would be a good opportunity to share the basics of what is involved with each piece of work using this technique.

PERCH

Step 1

Preparing the canvas with selected papers; wetting manipulating, tearing, and layering with various gel mediums, letting harden into its own unique surface.

Step 2

Applying sprays and pools of thin washes generously and excessively, allowing the variety of colours to randomly explore the many pathways suggested by the papers' textures.

Notice the paint pooling on the table?

Step 3

Further exploring the texture and shape of the image, line by line, with pen nib and acrylics, until all 3 steps merge as one, creating the final fused cohesive image.

I edited this baby in html!
Or rather . . . I downloaded a free template, and tweaked in html. That pretty much covers my html skills. But a little tweak goes a long way. Too bad it takes me hours to find the right code to modify--lots of edit, preview, undo, edit, preview, undo, edit, preview, undo, etc. etc. etc.
Yep, the hard way. : )

Hopefully, this version uploads faster. I did lose some stuff, but it is just a matter of putting it back up. Just an FYI out to those who pop in every now and then.

Tonight caught me indulging in my favorite pastime, daydreaming, while driving into town center on my way to pick up my youngest son from Volleyball. What was the fantasy in question? Apparently I covet a window display position. In Silver Bridge Gallery. Where some of my works currently hang.

Whilst self indulgently musing on the possible credible *snort* (more often incredible) scenarios of where I manage to sweet talk those paintings front and center to all passers by I drove past the very gallery in question.

Have you ever wondered (daydreamed) how you would react to . . . say . . . winning the lotto? Think you would be cool? Furiously hop up and down? Scream? Yet still be cool? Videotape-able even? Lets just say...keep that camera away from me.

Mad Artist Experiment #2

Previously to finishing the raven I was working on a landscape; autumn scene reflected in water. I thought I was being brilliant when I decided to cover the reflected scene with a translucent medium, attempting to add a ripple affect which I will then add more paint to once it dries. So I am up in my studio without running water (which becomes important in a bit.) I lay my canvas (16x20) on the floor and hammer some nails (in the floor) at one end to keep the canvas from moving toward me. I then lay two larger canvas boards along either side and place a canvas on top of each canavs board. So I figure I now have the depth of a canvas board above my painted canvas. I lay on an entire $15 dollar jar of heavy gel, confident I'll recover half. I've got a large quilters ruler and am going to run the ruler top to bottom over the reflected scene, sliding the ends along the canvas on either side hoping to fill in my painted canvas to a depth of a canvas board. Are you with me so far? Away I go, scraping the gel down the canvas with the large clear ruler.

It quickly becomes apparent that I did not allow for the "give" in the painted canvas itself. One lovely large dip right in the middle where the gel simply would not spread evenly and, lets face it, was as thick as at least 6 canvas boards. Panic.

I quickly grab another smaller canvas and place it under my gel disaster canvas. Respread gel.
GAK! Made a bad situation worse. Now I can see where the bottom support canvas edges are and there is still a glacial covering of gel in the center.

Quarters being somewhat cramped I have to step over my painting to locate a foam core board knowing full well that I was dribbling floor crumbs all over my canvas as I did so. Can't be helped. I'm certain I can blow it all away.

Located foam core, but hands are covered in gel, which is drying quite fast, and not a working water tap to be had! Nor a cloth. Nothing but a few tissues. Like THAT is going to wipe away heavy gel!
And do I have the proper cuting tools? No sirree. I have to use a seamstress's pattern marker ( you know, those spiky wheel thingys) and then rip and tear with my elbows and feet, hands being what they were. Then there is the awkward job of picking up gel covered canvas and placing gel covered foam core board into back for support. Re-lay the canvas, re-spread the gel.

Whoa! Is that...? Is that...paint smearing? Why yes! Yes it is! Once again, black acrylic ink strikes again by reconstituting and smearing it's merry self across the full lenth of my canvas.

Purse lips, clench teeth.

Thankfully, the foam core is an improvement. *whew*

Today, the gel is still drying. Yep, it is still rather thick in the middle, and thin on the edges, but it is at least rippled! And drying clear. Yes, I will definitely have to paint over some areas, especially those containing . . oh. . . wood slivers, dirt, specks of this and that . . . you know . . . floor crumbs!

As a third-generation cottager on Algonquin Park’s Smoke Lake and since 1988 a full time Muskoka resident, I am inspired by the region’s abundant green-scapes lush with hidden treasures for both body and mind. It is not only the imagery that lures, but the simple exquisite momentary experience of discovery.

I work primarily with pen nibs, acrylic inks and fluid acrylics on a textural multilayered fusion of manipulated papers combining extreme linear detailing. Paper is outrageously versatile. It brings to the process history, character, personality, individuality, and a remarkably wide range of performance levels. Fluid acrylics and inks allow me to alter paint consistency without sacrificing color strength; using this attribute to assist the paint’s exploration of the surface while maintaining colour intensity. As an acrylic its opacity is perfect for layering a galaxy of multi-hued lines, yet layered semi transparent washes are also achievable; a perfect partnership of mediums to satisfy the multiple media artist in me.

I am fascinated by the way these altered surfaces contribute to the process and influence the outcome. I am continually exploring the alluring intricate synergy between the surface, the paint and my own contribution; the result greater than the sum of the individual effects. I strive for each piece to establish rapport, to grasp that most basic language at work; a beautiful alignment of atoms where a natural magnetism or recognition occurs.

It has been awhile since I posted something for AEDM. Not for lack of being creative, though. I have worked on a number of things, some are just taking longer to complete!

I just fnished this painting today. I started it some time back, but set it aside as it was not going where I wanted it to go, and then I got side tracked by some new projects. This one is titled the Raven's Mirror. One of a series of birds done in this technique.

SWEET SOUP!
For lack of a better name.

(This pic was taken the next day, not as much broth left, but still yummy hot or cold!)

My creative effort for the day was to concoct a soup dish for dinner. Completely winged it people!

And it is sweet. But not from adding sugar!

Here is the recipe:

Brown a good 1lb of xtra lean ground beef with rosemary.

In a good sized pot add 1 tetra pack (900 mls?) container of chicken broth.
plus 2 cups water.
Put it on to boil.

Add to the pot:

1 can lentils somewhat drained
1 medium cooking onion diced large.
1 clove garlic chopped
1/2" cube ginger sliced and diced
1 large sweet potato peeled & diced
drain the beef somewhat and add
sea salt to taste

Bring to a boil and let s. potatos soften part way

then add another 2 cups water
Add about 2 handfuls or 1/2 a pack of large broad egg noodles
Boil

When noodles and potatoes are soft the dish is done!

This turned out really well! Entire family enjoyed.
And it is quite hearty.

Nov 5 2008. Ok, I can easily say that I have not done any figure drawing for over 17 years. Easily.

I think what saved me was that I arrived late, just got set up, had 5 or ten minutes left on this pose when FOUR MINUTES later my cell phone rings! I had to leave the class, pick up my son, drop him off at home and scoot back to class to start/finish the remaining 4 drawings. No time to feel the pressure.

4 minutes. Conte stick.

Oct 31 2008 A birthday present to me--finish this painting! See where the head of the oranda is? That spot used to hold a bird on a wire. As I was painting the foliage below I was grumbling on how I wished my bird was a fish. After leaving this painting for several weeks I decided...what the heck--white it out and paint a fish there instead. So I did! This is an 8x10 canvas using acrylic inks and fluid acrylics. I also used some of that coarse gel medium that looks like cottage cheese when wet, but dries all crystally.

Split Complimentary Colour Scheme

Working on colour schemes with a student of mine I discovered that I am a much freer painter when I am less concerned with the outcome. Another reason for loving every and any opportunity to draw or paint something virtually unplanned. It is full of surprises and discoveries.

MAC Portrait Studio 2

I do not consider myself a portrait artist, nor am I even that keen on drawing portaits. It is just not on my top ten list of subjects I'd like to draw. But I do love the practice. And it is great to have a live model. The challenge is certainly there to observe and interpret. So I think this is going to be a mission for me to try something different each time I go.

We are restricted to medium at the moment as we are in the gallery proper. Messy paint& water splatter is a no-no. However, once they have finished whatever it is they are working on in the lower level I understand there will be some freedoms in medium considered.

This Thursday's medium of choice was white gel pen on textured black cardstock.

BONUS FEATURE: It scared the heck out of my husband who got up late one night for a glass of water and was surprised by this portrait resting in a chair of our living room. Hee hee.

Portrait Fix

I could stand it no longer.
It just was NOT satisifying to change the image in a computer program. With zero concern for the time I got out my pastels and eraser and went to work. Thankfully, the eye erased easily.
It was 2 am before I was finished. Thank goodness it's a holiday weekend!

Live Portrait Drawing Class

October 9-2008 I attended Muskoka Arts & Crafts Portrait Open Studio.

Portrait Open Studio meets at the Chapel Gallery every Thursday evening at
7pm. A model is available and class members bring their own drawing
materials. No instruction is provided but support and fellowship is
available. The Portrait Class shows its work with the Life Drawing Open
Studio in an annual exhibition at the Chapel Gallery in the Spring.

My first live portrait drawing in umm...well..20 years? THAT is my excuse. I'm sticking to it. The other is...I thought we were doing a 20 minute sketch. So I was trying to get the gist and that is how I got the eyes all wrong. (see left hand side portrait). So I played with the eye in a photo program and it ismuch better. (see right hand side). My eldest son (16) is the model. : )

This past weekend one of the art groups I belong to (and recently was made President of) had a outing to record (in a manner of their choice) this year's Fall colours.

I have wanted to improve my photography skills for some time so when my eldest son registered for photography basics at our local Georgian College campus I have been learning second-hand by way of his teacher's handouts.

It was difficult to find a spot with good colour. I think we got out rather late as the colours have somewhat peaked already. My favorite doesn't have a lick of autumn colour in it. Typical. Perhaps I'll catch something before the sesason is completely over. *fingers crossed*

Mad Artist Experiment #1

You know when you get a crazy idea (sure you do) and yet it makes such perfect sense you just have to do it? Well...here are the results of my crazy idea. This painting was accomplished with fine paintbrushes, pen nibs, and my vacuum cleaner. That's right. My vacuum cleaner.

Luckily, when my computer's hard drive failed I still had a few images on my camera. This photo was taken on the Sunday. Both days were quite sunny but I managed not to burn overly.

My eldest son Mac was a huge help, too! Thank goodness he was willing to be there as long as I was required to be.

The Town of Bracebridge staff were super! Overall it was a highly enjoyable experience.

This was the first time I had ever had 5 canvases in the works at ONE time, so of course my studio is a complete trash at the moment. But I love it that way. : )
What I really need is a good easel...and a light stand...and a plethora of various sized canvases! Lots of ideas floating around here, and I never seem to have the right sized canvas. *dramatic sigh*

And a video camera. Have you seen the speeded up painting videos at youtube? (I have a couple linked to the side there.) Kinda cool! I would love to do that quite honestly.

So...now that you all know what to send me (ha ha), and I've shared my latest, I can move on to the next piece. It is quite a bit larger. : )

EMERGING ARTIST. Local artist Colleen Mitchell strikes a pose in her studio. Mitchell is just one of the 15 artists participating in Art in the Heart, a new initiative being put on by the town of Bracebridge. The event will feature different new and emerging artists showing their work in public spaces throughout the downtown. It will run for the weekends of August 16-17 and 23-24.

At first glance it may appear as though an art lesson is underway at Bracebridge’s Chapel Gallery, but this is no ordinary class. The group of artists in question had gathered for a pilot workshop being put on by the town of Bracebridge in partnership with the Muskoka Small Business Centre and Muskoka Arts and Crafts. The workshop is a part of Art in the Heart, an event dedicated to discovering emerging artists in downtown Bracebridge.
In April of this year, the District of Muskoka declared Muskoka to be a designated arts community. Art in the Heart is a result of the Town of Bracebridge supporting this declaration.
“When we started talking about the project we wanted to narrow our focus down to new and emerging artists so that we would be different and unique,” explains Cheryl Kelley, director of economic development for the town of Bracebridge.
Art in the Heart is a new initiative that will showcase the artists and their work on the streets, alleys and public spaces of downtown. The event is scheduled take place on the weekends of August 16 – 17 and 23 – 24.
To be considered for the initiative, artists had to submit an application along with photos of their work. Entries were then juried by a group of professional artists. This year the program accepted a total of 15 artists.
Elene Freer is the curator and coordinator for Muskoka Arts and Crafts. She says there was no shortage of talent for the jury to look at.
“The jury was extremely pleased with the calibre of artwork submitted,” she says. “It’s not surprising to us that Muskoka has a multitude of exciting new artists just waiting for an opportunity like Art in the Heart.”
Along with being invited to exhibit their work, artists were also able to partake in a pilot workshop. The goal of the workshop is simple: to help these new and emerging artists establish themselves by making them more business savvy.
Deena Brock is a managing business consultant with the Muskoka Small Business Centre. Brock was on hand at the workshop to provide helpful business tips and tackle challenges artists may be faced with. Topics she covered included everything from dealing with different forms of payment to how to handle a washroom break.
Brock believes information like this is invaluable to the artists, no matter how mundane or simple it may seem.
“Because they are new and emerging artists some of them are on the shy side,” she explains. “They are more than likely going to have questions and be unsure about this subject but not know how to go about getting the information.”
Kelley believes the lessons from the workshop are just one of the great perks of this initiative.
“We hear it all the time,” says Kelley, “about how many people in this region have an artistic ability or skill and there are lots of ways for them to promote their work once they’re established but there wasn’t a lot of ways for them to get there.”
Other topics brought up at the workshop included how to set-up an exhibit to be both visually stimulating and practical.
Art in the Heart is the first show local artist Carole Ann Thur has ever been a part of. She thinks it’s a great place to start.
“It’s a way to get exposure,” she says, “and also a good way to get business.”
The town is planning on running this initiative again next summer. They are also hoping for an increased interest from local artists.
“We’re hoping to have twice as many here next year!” exclaims Jill Harris, an economic development assistant with the town of Bracebridge.

. . . but I am finally getting some time to update my blog. Long story short: We moved to Bracebridge Ontario (from Novar Ontario) this past June and I opened my own studio located on our property. So it has all been about the unpacking, the cleaning, the organizing, the decorating, the preparing, trah lah lah and so on. No time for my EDM's (snif), painting or drawing and the like.

Well, I won't go on about my vida loca. Just thought I'd share some pics of the studio. From the outside. *grin*
